Traffic Alert - Thursday, September 5, 2024
ROCKFORD, IL
The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that weather permitting, traffic on Harrison Avenue and U.S. 20 in Cherry Valley will be shifted onto new pavement in the area of its interchange with Interstate 39 beginning the evening of Friday, Sept. 6, and continuing overnight through Saturday, Sept. 7. The traffic shift is needed to build the new westbound lanes as part of the $44.2 million project to convert the interchange with I-39 from a cloverleaf into a diverging diamond design on Harrison Avenue and U.S. 20.
The traffic shift will begin just east of Perryville Road, and traffic will transition back onto the existing pavement east of the Mill Road intersection. The northbound I-39 to eastbound U.S. 20 ramp will reopen to traffic, and both westbound Harrison Avenue traffic and South Mall Drive traffic will remain in their current configuration. It is anticipated that westbound traffic will be moved to the new pavement within the week. Beginning the evening of Thursday, August 22 and into Friday, August 23, the northbound I-39 to eastbound US 20 ramp (exit 122A) will be closed. Eastbound US 20 traffic will be routed to use the westbound Harrison Avenue ramp (exit 122B). New traffic signals will be activated on Harrison Avenue / US 20 just east of I-39. CONSTRUCTION NOTICE - Friday, April 26, 2024
Beginning Monday, April 29th (4/29) at 7:00 pm there will be lane and shoulder closures on I-39/US 20 eastbound and westbound, in the vicinity of the Mulford Rd. Overpass. The following closures will be for the demolition and removal of the parapet sections on the existing Mulford Rd. Overpass:
Monday, April 29th (4/29) @ 7:00 pm through 6:00 am – eastbound US 20 & northbound I-39 lane closures & westbound US 20 lane closures.
Tuesday, April 30th (4/30) @ 7:00 pm through 6:00 am– eastbound US 20 & northbound I-39 closures & westbound US 20 lane closures.
Thursday, May 2nd (5/2) @ 9:00 pm through 6:00 am – southbound I-39/exit ramp full closures.
Please note that all of these times and days are estimated. Updates for motorists will be provided.

The $247.6 million Rebuild I-39 project focuses on an approximately 4-mile stretch from Harrison Avenue to the north to the U.S. 20 interchange to the south, a vital transportation artery for northern Illinois that links communities, industries, manufacturing hubs and travelers across the region.
